Two pairs of lovers flee to the forest to escape the prospect of an arranged marriage. In the same forest, a group of bumbling laborers earnestly prepare “a tedious brief scene of tragical mirth” in honor of the upcoming royal wedding. All are secretly watched by Oberon, King of the Fairies and Puck, his mischievous servant, delighting in the antics of the foolish mortals.
