Harvey tells the story of a harmless inebriate, Elwood P. Dowd, and large, white, invisible rabbit that he calls Harvey. Elwood's sister Veta and her daughter, embarrassed by his actions and his chattering with the invisible Harvey, arrange to have Elwood treated at a sanitarium. Before the play is over, both the psychoanalyst and Veta believe they also have seen Harvey, and Veta decides not to permit Elwood to undergo any treatment, for she prefers that he remain as he is -- friendly, harmless, and happy. Most of the critics refer to (the play) Harvey as a fantasy, for it is supposed to deal with a fairy spirit found in old Celtic mythology.
