The Remembererby Steven DietzFrom Attic Theatre
Where: Appleton Art Center Performance date: November 13, 2003 Joyce Simmons Cheeka's story is a moving drama that follows a young Native American girl as she comes of age in changing world. From being entrusted by her tribe to be the "Rememberer" of their history to being kidnapped into a boarding school, which forbade speaking her native language, and assigned to be an assistant in the infirmary during a flu epidemic, Joyce learns how to balance both cultures and keep her heritage alive. This play reading is made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region. Watch for more information about the performance.
Audition info: held at the Attic office, 115 S. State St., Appleton, on Wed & Thurs, Oct 15 & 16, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Roles for five men, four women, and eight children; teens considered for child and adult roles. All ages and ethnicities encouraged-casting done by voice, not look. The play is the story of Joyce Simmons Cheeka, of the Squaxin tribe, set in 1911. The cast will attend six evening rehearsals and present the reading on Nov. 13 at 8:15 p.m. at the Appleton Art Center in honor of "The Native American Experience" exhibit.
