This Pulitzer Prize-winning play is based on true events (also chronicled in Thomas Keneally’s novel, The Playmaker) which supposedly occurred during the British settlement of Australia as a penal colony in 1788. The story centers around a group of convicts and British officers who must find a way to create a new society far away from the structured, civilized world. When the governor of the colony suggests that the convicts might be lifted out of their barbarism if exposed to civilized, cultural activities such as the theatre, one of the British officers is appointed to direct a group of convicts in a production of an 18th century comedy of manners. The results are often hilarious, but just as often emotional and disturbing. FRS Code M.
Auditions - Feb. 10-11, 2003, 6-9pm at Rebel Alliance Theatre, 445 N. Main St., Oshkosh. We will be casting 5-8 Female and 7-10 Male actors ages 14 and over. Actors under 18 will be need their parent’s permission to audition for this play: the characters are prisoners and the military personnel assigned to control them. The play deals with a variety of volatile issues, among them crime and punishment, nature-vs-nurture, power, race, gender, and class. Due to some mature language and situations, this play is rated M on the Rebel Alliance Family Ratings System scale. All roles are open to the community.
