This Victorian look at the exotic culture of 19th century Japan as a back drop for a whimsical tale of love, deception and death as prescribed by tradition, is set to music in a fashion which is considered classical Gilbert and Sullivan. The story is set into motion when Ko Ko, who has been elevated to the rank of grand executioner, is condemned to execute himself for breaking the law of flirting. The story continues with the arrival of Nanki-Poo the Emperor's son who is attempting to escape from a marriage commitment and falls in love with Yum Yum, a local girl. The story escalates to a humorous and lighthearted conclusion.
